One of our favorite dresses, this cute outfit is period correct to about 1830 and represents the type of play dresses that girls wore during the Romantic Era. It's a beautiful style and bridges the time between the extra long Regency Dresses with their minimal and high bodice styles and the beginning of the decadent Victorian Era. The fully lined bodice has princess seams in the back, along with a button closure. The waist is slightly empire. The shoulder drops to the back by an inch or so, as dresses did in the 1800's. The sleeves are slightly flared with small gathers at the shoulders. The 4-gore skirt is full and declared "very twirly" by our tester. It comes 1"- 2" shorter than our size chart lengths. Girls of the time wore long pantaloons underneath their dresses, as shown. The pantaloons create a very sweet combination for special occasions or perhaps even climbing trees. You can order pantaloons separately or as a dress set on in this same section of the website. This dress fits fairly snugly in the bodice. We recommend sizing up one size if you would like some extra room. For a historic look, use a small floral or calico print in a light color. Pattern used by permission from Sense and Sensibility.
Standard approximate finished lengths are 1-2 inches shorter than shown in the size chart below. If you have a child who does not fit into a size fairly close to her age, please use the contact form at the top of the page to drop us a note so that we can help you with sizing.
