Linens and Heavier Cottons
Along with flannel these fabrics are our favorite cool weather choices and "bottom" fabrics, meaning that they work well for skirts and jumpers year round. As with all of our other fabrics, if you are unsure, send for a fabric sample before ordering.
Corduroy: Our cotton 21 wale/featherwale corduroys are super soft and nice and warm at 4.5-5 oz per square yard. They make for good bottom weight garments but work very nicely in dresses and jumpers as well. I wouldn't recommend them for garments with collars as I find that the edges of the collar wear more quickly in cord than they do in other fabrics.
Twill: Our twill fabrics are about 5.5-6 oz per square yard and are especially durable for skirts and jumpers. Twill isn't as soft as other fabrics when first bought but softens up with use. I would say that the solid twill a bit heavier in weight than the prints.
Chino: Our chino is similar to the twill in weight but has a softer hand and lovely drape. We love chino skirts!
Pique: Pique fabrics are kind of unique. They have a raised stripe or bird's eye type weave and are heavier than our quilting cottons. They breathe very nicely and really do work very well year round. The best way to describe the feel is a high quality heavy T-shirt without the stretch.
Denim and Chambray: These fabrics are fabulous. You can use them for dresses, skirts, jumpers and just about anything that looks good in a slightly heavier fabric. Our denims are not jean weight but dress weight at 6oz per square yard and our denim chambrays are 4.5-5 ounces per square yard. Denim and chambray are yarn dyed fabrics which means that the color is dyed through the fabric and not printed on top. Because of this you will notice variations and irregularities in the fabric like slight changes in color and slubs in the weave.
Linen Blends: Linen blends are a nice way to enjoy linen affordably. They are 5.6 oz per square yard and have a reasonable heft. The cotton content softens the harder flax content and creates a nice feel and drape. I would recommend washing in cold water on delicate cycle and hanging or laying to dry as these fabrics will shrink a bit when first washed. All solid fabrics are 55% linen and 45% cotton unless otherwise specified. The three calicos are 70% cotton and 30% linen and have a nice heavy heft and would be best for winter.
